Unconventional Gemstones for Unique Engagement Rings

When someone hears engagement ring, diamonds usually come to mind. Traditionally, diamonds have been the gemstone of choice when choosing an engagement ring. It all started with an ad campaign by De Beers in the 1940's. Their slogan which is still often heard today was, "A Diamond Is Forever" and it paved the way for diamonds dominating the engagement ring market. This appealed to people because the 'foreverness' of the diamond was an ideal representation of what marriage should be.

A romantic idea and clever marketing, however, it isn't entirely true. Diamonds, although rated a 10 on moh's scale of hardness, can be broken in half with a butter knife. They can also be chipped, discolored, shattered, and turned into ash. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE diamonds. They are a classic choice and have a stunning sparkle to them, however, it doesn't mean they have to be the main gemstone of an engagement ring! Why limit ourselves when there's a wondrous, glorious, expansive world of other gemstones out there? Many of which are much more precious than your average diamond! Sapphire engagement rings and rubies are my favourite alternative gemstones to use for a handmade gold ring designs. They are both very hard and durable gemstones rating a 9 on moh's scale, making them comparable to diamonds. Sapphires come in a range of colours and cuts making them suitable for all types of engagement rings. To see some examples of some handmade sapphire engagement rings click here.

Some other great alternative gemstones for a handmade engagement ring include the peachy gemstone morganite which pairs beautifully with rose gold. Vibrant emeralds ranging from rich to light greens. Even tourmaline which comes in a range of colours. Choosing an alternative gemstone for a unique engagement ring can be a lot of fun and adds a thoughtful element to the gold ring. It makes for a personal touch that can be used in conjunction with one's birthstone or even one's favourite colour. Many of my clients are fond of the outdoors in which case a nature inspired sapphire ring with a green stone would be most appropriate. Or for the ocean lover I'll often do a nautical inspired sapphire ring with a blue stone.

The options are endless with about 200 varieties of natural gemstones. I will make things easy for you and help you narrow down your gemstone choice for the perfect one-of-a-kind handmade engagement ring.
